Motor vehicle makers have called a summit to counter the barrage of demands for improved environmental and safety standards.

The gathering of motor vehicle ?competitors? illustrates the seriousness with which the industry is taking demands by pressure groups for new environmental legislation.

The aim of the conference was to prepare motor vehicle makers for interaction with the government and other sectors such as the oil sector, to think out the relation between automotive products and society, for instance in the field of environment and safety.

It wasn?t summit of competitors as only non-competitive issues were discussed.

The motor industry is facing a raft of new legislation in Europe on environmental and safety standards over the next few years.

It is also lobbying hard in the US against an increase in fuel efficiency requirements, which would hurt the booming sales of gas-guzzling off-road vehicles.
