JGC Corp. has launched a business offering to construct IGCC (integrated gasification combined cycle) power plants that make use of residual oil in a controllable fashion.
Residual oil, or resid, is a mixture of oil products that remains after petroleum is distilled. There are few applications for resid, and dealing with the waste is a headache for oil companies.
JGC's IGCC system integrates the gasification facility with the combined cycle power generation facility, where electricity is produced through a combination of gas and steam turbines. The company has devised a technology that will directly convert resid into a fuel for generating power.
JGC has already constructed one IGCC facility for Nippon Petroleum Refining Co. The plant produces 430,000kw and can process as much as 50,000 tons of resid per month, making it the largest facility of its kind in the world.
