Japan Atomic Power Co has applied for the construction of two nuclear reactors at its power station in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture. The No 3 and 4 reactors at the power station will be the first of an improved version of pressurized light-water reactors introduced in Japan. The version features a reactor core and steam generator that are larger than usual.

Japan Atomic Power said it plans to launch commercial operations in March 2014 for the No 3 reactor and in March 2015 for the No 4 reactor. Each reactor will generate 1,538 MW of power.
