China's National Development and Reform Commission vice-minister Zhang Guobao said that the current opinion that China is the second largest oil importer in the world is a false rumor, Beijing Times reported.
According to China Customs statistics, China imported over 100 million tons of crude oil for the first time in history in 2003, and 120 million tons in 2004.
Japanese Ministry of Finance's statistics show that Japan had an import of 1.542 billion barrels of crude oil or 211 million tons in 2004 while the United States imports 400 million annually.
Zhang Guobao said China mainly depends on domestic energy resources, and its import of 120 million tons of oil only makes up just 6 per cent of the world trade volume.
Zhang said that during the first energy policy dialogue held between China and the United States on June 30, US Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman said that the USA always deemed China as a big energy resources consumer without being aware of the fact that China is also the second largest energy producer in the world.
