Dutch authorities canceled a shipment of Dodewaard spent fuel to the U.K. because police protection and other resources are being diverted to combat hoof-and-mouth disease, according to British Nuclear Fuels plc. A second shipment of spent fuel from the Borssele plant to Cogema's La Hague reprocessing complex was also postponed indefinitely, according to press reports. Officials said 400 police officers would be needed to guard the spent fuel transport and they were more urgently needed to help prevent spread of hoof-and-mouth, which has affected the Netherlands, though to a much lesser extent than the U.K.
