BRUNSWICK, Maine, Jun 19, 2001 - Maine Natural Gas Company (MNG), a member of the Energy East family of companies, announced today that construction has begun on a new pipeline designed to provide natural gas transportation service to the Brunswick Naval Air Station (BNAS) and to homes and businesses in the towns of Brunswick and Topsham. MNG has a multi-year contract with the BNAS to provide gas delivery service to over 30 buildings and several housing units located on the Base and additional naval housing complexes located in Brunswick and Topsham. MNG will start serving customers in these communities this November.
"We are excited to be providing many years of quality gas service to the BNAS and to customers in Brunswick and Topsham," said Darrel R. Quimby, MNG's Vice-President. "A competitively-priced, clean-burning and reliable supply of natural gas will benefit the local economy, the environment and consumers throughout the region."
MNG's pipeline to serve the BNAS, Brunswick and Topsham will originate at the Maritimes and Northeast interstate transmission pipeline in Bowdoin, ME. Construction in 2001 includes the siting of a metering and pressure regulation station in Bowdoin, the installation of 14 miles of steel pipe from Bowdoin to the Base, and approximately seven miles of plastic pipe for distribution and service lines throughout the Air Station. Expansion of the plastic distribution system to serve homes and businesses in Brunswick and Topsham will begin this year and continue in 2002 and 2003.
MNG began serving its first Maine customer in May of 1999. It has built and is expanding local distribution systems to serve customers in Windham and Gorham and is providing transportation service to Calpine Corporation's new 540 megawatt gas-fired electric generating plant located in Westbrook.
