Ford Motor?s Hertz unit, the biggest US car rental company, has said that it has opened eight locations in China in an effort to tap into that country's growing demand.
?China in the long term will easily be the largest car rental market in Asia,? Hertz spokesman Richard Broome said. ?We want to be part of that.?
Hertz began renting vehicles to local residents in January through licensee China National Automobile Anhua International Trade Co. This week it won government permission to rent chauffeur driven vehicles to foreigners. Travelers are barred from driving in China on a non-Chinese driver's license and must hire a driver, Broome said.
Hertz, based in Park Ridge, New Jersey, said it hopes the move also will attract Chinese business people and government officials traveling abroad to the Hertz brand.
