Ballard Power Systems, the Canadian maker of fuel cells, has said that it has received a two million dollar order from Nissan Motor, Japan's third biggest car maker.
The fuel cells will be delivered this year, Ballard said in a statement. The company, which had previously worked with Nissan, also is supplying fuel cells to the Honda Motor Company and DaimlerChrysler.
Nissan and other carmakers are developing vehicles that use fuel cells rather than gasoline burning engines. Automakers are under pressure from governments to build cars and trucks that consume less fuel and create less pollution.
Fuel cells are battery like devices that generate electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen. Under ideal conditions, they produce just water vapor and heat.
