Airbus has won an order for two A330 wide body aircraft from Emirates airline worth as much as $279 million, the Dubai based carrier said in an e-mailed statement.
The transaction takes to seven the total number of A330-200s Emirates has on order with Airbus. All planes will be delivered to the Arab world's largest airline by October next year, the carrier said. Emirates already operates twenty two of the planes.
?These new orders have been placed to support the airline's expansion,? said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum, the airline's chairman, in the statement. ?New destinations and more flights to existing destinations are planned for 2003.?
Emirates plans to triple the size of its fleet to about a hundred planes by the end of the decade as it seeks to capitalize on Dubai's Persian Gulf location between Europe and Asia, tapping the East-West flow of passengers. The airline also plans to buy more Boeing 777 aircraft.
