EasyJet Plc and Go Fly Ltd., a no frills rival that it is buying, carried more passengers in June as they added routes and won passengers from larger rivals. EasyJet stock surged nineteen percent on the news, its second biggest one day increase since its IPO.
EasyJet's passenger count jumped by fifty two percent to 958,857 from a year ago, the airline said in a Regulatory News Service statement. Go's passenger total soared seventy two percent to 550,749, the carrier said in an e-mailed statement.
EasyJet will supplant Ryanair Holdings as Europe?s largest low cost airline when it completes the purchase of Go for 374 million pounds ($568 million) this month. Go will add southern European cities such as Rome to EasyJet's network as well as the UK bases of East Midlands and Bristol.
?East Midlands is growing very quickly and we want to make sure we keep passengers there with low prices,? EasyJet Chief Executive Officer Ray Webster said in an interview. ?We're finalizing our winter flying program now and may put more aircraft into East Midlands to link it with winter ski destinations such as Munich.?
