Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin opened a new oil and gas institute at the Siberia Federal University while travelling through Siberia and the Far East. Speaking to faculty and students, Putin said the new institute would prepare specialists to work in the nation's rapidly-developing oil and gas sector.
This, he said, foremost concerned Siberia and the Far East, given the large number of projects in these regions.
In answer to a question on the possibility of student stipends being raised, Putin said no raise was envisioned this year, since the financial results for the year were as yet unknown. He also asked students to help in establishing winter sports in Akademgorodok.
